Ticks Are a Year-Round Concern
Tick activity in Northwest Arkansas is more consistent and more intense than in many other regions. The Ozark landscape—wooded hills, creek corridors, and abundant deer populations—supports high tick populations, and the relatively mild winters here mean ticks can be active outside of summer. The lone star tick and the American dog tick are both common in this area and both capable of transmitting disease. Any time you or your pets spend in wooded areas, tall grass, or leaf litter, tick checks afterward are a practical habit. Brown Recluse Spiders Are Present Here
Brown recluse spiders are common in Arkansas, and new residents from areas outside the spider’s range are often surprised to learn they are living in a region where the species is established. Arkansas sits within the brown recluse’s native range, and the species is found throughout Northwest Arkansas—in homes, garages, storage areas, and outbuildings. They are not aggressive, and bites are uncommon, but they prefer undisturbed spaces where people reach without looking: storage boxes, shoes left in a garage, and clothing stored in rarely accessed closets. The habit of shaking out footwear and gloves before putting them on is a practical one in this region.
Chiggers Are a Local Reality
New residents from the Northeast and West Coast are often unfamiliar with chiggers. Chigger mites are microscopic larvae that attach to skin and cause intensely itchy welts. They are found in tall grass, wooded edges, and brush areas throughout Northwest Arkansas and are active from late spring through early fall. They are not dangerous, but an afternoon in a grassy area without protection can result in dozens of bites that itch for days. Insect repellent applied to clothing before outdoor activity and showering promptly after being in suspect areas reduces exposure significantly.
Mosquito Season Is Long
Northwest Arkansas receives significant rainfall distributed through spring, summer, and fall, and the region’s wooded terrain retains moisture well. Mosquito season runs from May through October, and properties near wooded areas, drainage features, or any standing water have consistent mosquito activity through the full season. This is a longer and more active mosquito season than residents from drier regions may be accustomed to.
Termites Are Active in This Region
Subterranean termites are active throughout Arkansas, and Northwest Arkansas is no exception. New residents who moved from regions where termites are less common sometimes underestimate the risk. Eastern subterranean termites in this region swarm in spring, and properties with crawl space foundations or wood-to-soil contact are at higher risk. A termite inspection is a practical step for anyone who has recently purchased a home in the area and has not had one performed.
Stinging Insects Are Seasonal but Significant
Paper wasps, yellow jackets, and bald-faced hornets are all active in Northwest Arkansas from spring through fall. Yellow jacket ground nests are a particular hazard in yards with open lawn areas and wooded edges. New residents who are not accustomed to watching for ground nests during yard work are the ones most often surprised by them.
